Poppy Embroidered Silk Pillow Cover - Charcoal/Pink

The pattern is hand-printed using a complex color-discharge block printing technique, which allows for bright colors to be printed onto a darker dye-based fabric. Each piece is then embellished with delicate hand embroidery for a sublime finish. 

The Poppy design showcases three pink poppies decorated with fine stitches tracing each petal and stem, surrounded by a delicate border of tanka work embroidery. The inspiration for the pillows came from the pallu of Indian sarees, the most intricately decorated loose end that is draped over the shoulder, and a canvas for stunning display of design and craftsmanship.

Process: Using carved wooden blocks, our artisans handprint each color of the design one by one using a different block onto the hand-dyed tussar silk. The sticky printing paste is made from gum and dye mixed with a discharging agent and illuminating colors. When the printing is completely dry, the fabric is steamed, causing a chemical reaction that “discharges” the pre-existing charcoal color from the printed areas on the fabric, and fixes the illuminating colors in its place. 

In the final stage, each pillow is intricately embellished with a mix of running stitches, back stitches and stem stitches chosen to complement the shape of each motif. Although simple, the regularity of each stitch adds character and detail, and speaks to the refinement of the artisans’ craft. The final effect is hauntingly beautiful – the perfect meeting of art and science.
