The Carnation design showcases the classic botanical carnation motif in brick red and off-white set against a deep indigo blue background. A scrolling floral border adds the finishing touch.

Drawing upon rich tradition and technique, our red, off-white and indigo dyed collection is made using a complex process called “Jahota” printing that produces subtle variations in color and pattern, lending depth and character to each piece.

Our individually crafted indigo placemats are the perfect complement to your fine china or a tasteful addition to even the simplest of meals. Sold in sets of two, they are easy to combine with linen you already own or other designs in our collection to create a delightful table setting.

*Some color rub-off is to be expected in indigo dyed textiles over a few initial wash cycles. We recommend cold washing separately before use.

Process: This meticulous craft originates from the village of Jahota in Rajasthan and combines the “bagru” and “dabu” printing processes. The design is hand block printed in black and red colors that are typical in bagru printing.

The mud-resist or “dabu” process is then used in a 2-step process for indigo dyeing in two shades. The pattern that is not blue in the final design is covered entirely by carefully block printing over it with a dye-resistant mud paste. The fabric is then dusted with sand and dried in sunlight before dipping it gently into an indigo dye bath to achieve a light blue shade for the background. The pattern appearing in light blue is then blocked with the dabu, and the fabric is placed back in an indigo bath to get the deep blue background. The dabu is then removed, and all the colored patterns are revealed.
